Born Survivors: Three Young Mothers and Their Extraordinary Story of Courage, Defiance, and Hope
by Wendy Holden
I have read what I feel like is a large amount of Holocaust books. Never did I imagine that a baby would live through that Hell, let alone, three babies. Imagine if you were covered in lice and sores and starving to death. You weighed sixty pounds and were working fourteen hour days. These women did not have to imagine it, they lived it. They lived it while pregnant with a baby. WOW! Think about that! Pretty hard to imagine! These women put their child before anything else and somehow miraculously they all managed to survive.
The book brings together the three surviving babies. It also reunites them with those who helped liberate them from the Camps. This story will make you realize that no matter what you know about the Holocaust, there is still more to discover. When you thought you had heard the worst of the worst, there is still more that will surprise you.
This was an inspirational tale and certainly worth looking into. Holden does a wonderful job of researching her subjects. They only problem I had with the whole story was that I found it hard to keep the women straight. I am not sure if that was just me. Obviously their stories had similarities, but the way the story was set up was distracting for me.
