Monday Memories: Little House on the Prairie

I remember reading Little House on the Prairie over and over as a child. I loved the illustrations. I loved the scene where Laura and Mary eat the pig tails and where Pa plays the fiddle. Just thinking about the book brings up good memories for me. I loved the family and how much they loved each other. It was realistic because their life was never easy but they kept on going. I think this is the book that made me fall in love with history. Some of my favorite reads are historical fiction and non-fiction. I enjoy learning about times and places and things that I will never be able to visit. Books bring life to these places and times. For me they are real and happening and I can picture myself there. I love Little House. I still love the show and all the books. It brings back memories that I will never forget.

Monday Memories: Comes the Blind Fury

Since it is October I am going to go with a favorite spooky read. My choice for this week is
Comes the Blind Fury
This is the first book I ever read by John Saul. It is also the first horror novel I read. The story is about a blind girl who is bullied. She actually dies while being bullied. Then years later she comes back to seek her revenge. This one is not gory or disgusting. It is just a good scary, atmospheric, ghost story. This would be the perfect read for a dark October night. There is nothing too graphic here so it would be good to share with teens looking for a mild scare. This is the book that hooked me on John Saul. I have read many of his books and have never been disappointed.

Frightfall Read-A-Thon Wrap Up! and This Is Not A Test Review!!

Product DetailsProduct Details

These were the two books I challenged myself to read this past week for Frightfall read-a-thon. In order to complete my goal I only needed to finish one book. Thank Goodness! This past week has been very busy, but I was able to finish one of the books. Following is my review of This Is Not A Test.

This is Not a Test

I will start by saying that this book was very hard for me to get into. I kept waiting for all of the action and death and blood and gore. The beginning starts off quite slow. Sloane and some other adolescents are holed up in a school while the zombies are waiting outside the doors. This is so not your typical zombie story. This is more a novel about how we survive and what we choose to do when confronted with our past and our future. The story is gritty and the characters all have flaws, what teens don't? The zombies themselves are background characters. Most of the time they don't even figure into the story. The zombies don't enter the storyline itself until about half way through the book. They make a brief, very brief showing, and then we are back to the drama of adolescence.

The book is not bad, not by any means. The characters are easy to relate to and will stir your emotions. Some of them you want to hug, others you want to shoot. The zombies are not really even needed for the main part of the story. They are just a backdrop for these teens to confront their hidden fears. There is a very small smattering of zombie violence, but not enough to consider this an action novel. If you are looking for your typical zombie book, don't look here, because that is not this book. There is very little going on, except for in the hearts and minds of these teens. Their world is crumbling around them, while they worry about who will kiss who, and if they will ever leave the school.

What will happen when an adult enters their closed in world? Will they stay at the school or move on? Who will live and who will die? You will have to read the book to find out the answers to those questions. I did see that there will be a sequel to this book. So if you like this one then look for the next one in January 2015.

Please Remain Calm

Sadly, I didn't even have time to start The Sleepwalkers. I am hoping to finish it this month and get some scares. I want to thank SeasonsReading for hosting this Read-A-Thon. I hope you find your horror fix in the month of October!!

Book Blast: A Cat Taught Me That

A Cat Taught Me That blast banner

Blurb:

Catnap often.  Don’t be a stalker unless food is involved.  Despite the rumor, it is okay to be curious!  A Cat Taught Me That is filled with humorous advice and the wisdom of elder cats that includes information on how to get more out of life, and how to avoid common pitfalls along the way.  Cat lovers will enjoy the adorable photographs and cute illustrations throughout.
Celebrity cat ‘Awesome Louie’ provides insight with his gritty cat interviews, as well as sage advice with his “Mewsings” column.  Short essays from the cat-lady author will bring smiles to the faces of readers who have learned that “Not All That Glitters is Gold” and “To Be Kissed By a Cat” can have unintended consequences.

Excerpt:

“A Little Indulgence is Okay"

I’m Louie and I’ve been told I have a problem with cat treats.  Of course, a problem is in the eye of the beholder.  In my eyes, loving cat treats isn’t a problem unless I run out of them.

After I was rescued, I learned three things about my caregiver and new best friend.  First, food was readily available day or night; I would never be hungry again.  Second, I was now living in a house that was warm and cozy; freezing outside in the winter was highly unlikely.  Third, I learned about this tasty food called “snacks”.  I would come to love it when my caregiver announced the magical words with enthusiasm – “Kitty treats!”

When I was first introduced to this fabulous dining experience, the flavors included turkey, beef and chicken.  Eventually catnip and dairy-flavored treats entered the scene.  Once I tasted those little nuggets of goodness, I was hooked.

I perfected the sad kitty face, which is subtle and very effective when done properly.  The trick is to look longingly at your target and try not to blink.  Raise a paw in a slightly pathetic manner towards the treat container as the caregiver opens it – a classic move.

While my owner swears that she may check me into a clinic for cats with food addictions, she is more purr than hiss.  I know that the next time she comes home from the pet store with kitty snacks, she’ll rattle the bag because she knows I’m listening.  I’ll come racing into the kitchen like a furry, 16 pound bowling ball on steroids, and she’ll love me for it.  And give me treats.
Take it from me, you can never be too furry or have too many treats!
